A quick Hi from the birth place of a really phenomenal achievement – Mahónesa. Guess what I mean?
Exactly, the good ol’ mayonnaise originates from here. That’s what they say. It’s not to compare with the industrial soft soap we are familiar with – no, here you get a homemade one whenever you take place in a restaurant or pub. Extra yummy with baguette and garlic – a typical case of pigged out before the ordered menu get served. ;)
Mahón. The island capital at the very east with its huge natural harbor. Don’t be deterred by the fact its a capital – Mahón is menorcan styled laid back, walkable and with its 30,000 inhabitants incomparable with big and busy capital cities.
As we live by the old town city center we don’t need no plan about where to go. We just stroll around the streets and alleys to discover things occasionally. We are just wasting time and do some shoppings at Carrer Nou and on the market at Claustre del Carme, a former monastery located at the Placa del Princep. Pretty cool!
Those who love extensive sightseeing may find many churches and museums and siege culture and its explanations in any other guide book. We won’t and are completely happy with the easy going atmosphere in the city. Our memory is full due to so many impressions from the last days.
One more hint for all friends of hard liquors: The gin brand Xoriguer also originates from Mahón. So those who don’t get enough may go attend a destillery tour, look behind the scenes and savor the juniper berry spirit with 38 % AbV. Ideally in the midday heat – what a rare fun! :)
After sunset, best place for having dinner or just some drinks might be the waterfront area Baixamar. But also the old town offers a variety of pubs and restaurants. Mahónesa included – ¡Que aproveche!
