So, lazy days are over, today is the first day we run under full load. Uaaahhh … We decided to step onto the Camí at Son Saura, a desert beach at the south coast, 10 km away from Ciutadella.

Needless to say that for this distance the thoroughbred backpacker (like us) takes a taxi. :)  At 8:50 we make the first step on the Camí. Good chemistry right away.

Son Saura is a gentle cove with two huge white sandy beaches sliding into the turquoise sea. We CAN’T walk along this beach wearing boots for simply tactile reasons, so we are barefoot after only 30 minutes on the road. But just til the end of the beach, as here it starts to be craggy. It takes a good hour to reach the Cala des Talaier (cala = cove, bay) and another one to Cala en Turqueta. Each more beautiful than the other and worth to spend the day at.

What you should know: the western part of the south coast is quite rocky and crossed by many gorges. Where the gorges meet the sea, they’ve created amazing inlets with sandy beaches and calm, crystal water. Most of them have escaped the masses as they are not accessible by car and offer no facilities to the visitors. We embrace this peaceful beauty and move on.

The way ahead to Cala Macarellata leads through pine woods and takes another hour. This place will be the most beautiful at the end of the day, so we’ve decided it’s time for Siesta. And lunch – its 2 pm by the way. We go swimming and snorkeling and enjoy the rest and the view. It’s hard to leave – but we have to.

From here, there are two possibilities to reach the neighbour cove called Cala Macarella. The shorter but more complicated one is along the eastern crag what you need to climb up. At the moment, we don’t know about it and walk along the Camí, a much better option with 15 kg backpacks! After another 30 minutes we arrive at Cala Macarella.

Another beauty requiring another break during which we discover the crag path to the neighbour cove we’ve visited before. Funny adventure to scramble around, and the view is amazing.

Back at the beach it’s hard to say good bye – mainly as we can see what is ahead of us. We are deep inside the gorge – and have to come out, means the next 3.6 km are a difficult access, only supported by some wooden stairs. What an awful torture! Might have been easier with light luggage what we don’t have anyway. Up on the hill you have an amazing view on both the Macarella coves (so long as you walk a few steps til the coastline view point). We enjoyed it very much for quite a long time ;).

The last hop for today leads to the village of Cala Galdana thus back to civilization. Our hillside apartment complex is promising and … of course, our apartment is the farthest on the top level. I refuse – on the ground level of course – NO MORE STAIRS TODAY!

As there is no other chance I give up after a little while, climb up, and invest my last piece of energy in cooking and sitting on the terrace.
